ENG 417 - Milton

Credits: 3

Prerequisite(s): Junior standing; ENG 211WI  and ENG 212WI .
This course examines the prose and poetry of John Milton, Europe's last and perhaps greatest humanist poet. Students will begin with an assortment of Milton's minor poetry: pastoral elegy, religious panegyric, dramatic verse, and masque, before moving on to a selection of artfully crafted prose tracts written during the English Revolution and addressing issues of censorship, divorce, freedom, and rebellion. The course concludes with Milton's masterpiece, Paradise Lost.
