ENG 145 - Intensive English for Academic Purposes with Lab

Credits: 3

Prerequisite(s): Placement or consent of instructor.
Corequisite(s): ENG 010.
Prerequisite(s)/Corequisite(s): Building on literacy skills acquired in students' first and subsequent languages, this course prepares multilingual first year students to succeed in courses requiring a high level of proficiency in academic English, such as the First Year Seminar and the First Year Writing Program. While the curriculum addresses the full spectrum of language skills (reading, writing, listening, speaking, and thinking), the emphasis is on written communication. Topics include sentence construction and vocabulary development, including the structure of Latin-based words that occur frequently in academic English; rhetorical and organizational features of college-level expository writing; and documentation and standards of academic integrity. A series of short papers based on assigned readings across a variety of academic disciplines is required. Opportunities for practicing listening and speaking skills are provided through a variety of group activities (in and outside of class) and occasional oral presentation assignments. This course has a lab requirement (ENG 010) in which students are required to meet, in small groups, with a Writing Center faculty tutor for one hour per week. This meeting will count for 10% of their course grade in ENG 145. Students who earn a grade of "D+," "D," "F," or "WF" in ENG 145 must retake the course until they achieve a grade of "C-" or higher. Students may not withdraw from this course.
