EDD 350 - Principles of Speech and Hearing for the Classroom Teacher

Prerequisite(s): EDU 202WI , SLS 201 , and SLS 202  
Corequisite(s): EDD 349  
A study of the speech and hearing mechanisms and the challenges and needs of children who are deaf and hard of hearing. Students will identify the concepts and terminology and definitions of terminology related to the primary functions and components of the auditory system, understand the types and causes of hearing loss, gain an understanding of the various types of amplification systems and their use, and understand and interpret information of formal and informal audiological assessments. Additionally, students will learn and apply practical strategies to determine goals and interventions for developing and supporting spoken language development and functional listening skills in children who are deaf and hard of hearing. Students will also explore alternatives to providing visual support to audiological information and will earn a Cued Speech certificate upon completion of the course. 

This course addresses state and national certification standards required for students enrolled in the undergraduate Deaf Education
Program. Offered Fall Semester only in conjunction with EDD 349
