REL 311 - The Enlightenment Credits: 3
This course surveys the cultural and intellectual history of the European Enlightenment, ca. 1680-1800, in transnational perspective. Often heralded the founding moment of European modernity, the Enlightenment has more recently been critiqued from postmodern and postcolonial perspectives. Structured in a seminar format, this course combines study of major historiographical debates with close reading of complex Enlightenment-era political, social and philosophical treatises. Themes to be addressed include sociability, the public sphere, gender, slavery, national differences, historical and intercultural reflection, the nature of man, reason and religion, and the relationship between politics and ideas.
