African American Studies Minor

The African American Studies minor at Flagler College is an interdisciplinary (“integrated”) minor that coordinates courses on people of African descent in the United States, Latin America, and the Caribbean into a coherent and rewarding academic offering that encourages students to think critically about the global black experience.  The program is designed to facilitate the development of critical thinking skills that will challenge students to become thoughtful, reflective, an engaged citizens of a multi-cultural and multi-ethnic global community.  Multidisciplinary methods of inquiry and research give students a range of theoretical approaches to the central questions and concerns of Diaspora studies–including history, race, culture, identity, diversity, and society.  The African American Studies program will also promote a campus climate that encourages students to reflect upon and discuss contemporary issues regarding race, ethnicity, and culture from a position of informed understanding.
