Public History Major

The mission of the Public History Program is to further the preservation and presentation of history. Students will become proficient in the foundations, methods, theories, and ethics of public history, including museum studies, heritage tourism, oral history, and digital history. Their work will include development of and writing for exhibitions and interpretive programs; studying and interpreting audience engagement in museums, historic sites, and tourist attractions; collecting and interpreting oral histories; and developing digital archives and exhibits. Public History at Flagler College actively engages students in academic and community projects. Students take a total of 13 courses (39 credit hours), as follows:

Historical Methods (3 credit hours)
Choose 3 Public History Methods Courses (9 credit hours)
Students must take 9 credit hours of Public History Methods courses from this list. 2 Internships (6 credit hours)
Internships may be done during any semester. Placement occurs during pre-registration. Schedule a meeting with the Director of Public History. Summer internships may be approved for 6 credit hours. Choose 1 Capstone (3 credit hours)
Students may take HIS 470 or HIS 473, for 3 credits, to fulfill this requirement. 4 History Courses at the 300 or 400 level (12 credit hours)
Students must complete 12 credit hours in History that are not Public History Methods courses. At least 3 of those credits must be at the 400 level. Choose 2 Courses from Outside Disciplines.
Students must take 2 courses outside the discipline. These cannot also count towards a student’s minor or double major. Below is the current approved list. Other courses may be approved at the discretion of the Director of Public History. Notes
A course counting towards fulfillment of the Public History Major or Minor, with the exception of HIS 200, cannot count towards the fulfillment of the History Major or Minor. Similarly, courses from outside disciplines may not count for both the Public History Major or Minor and another Major or Minor.
