Liberal Arts Major

Return to {$returnto_text} Return to: Programs of Study by Department

The Liberal Arts major is designed to take students on an interdisciplinary journey through Humanities, Art, Science and Literature. Mastering the skills of inquiry, analysis and innovation, students will expand their knowledge across a broad array of topics and issues, both old and new. The Liberal Arts major is deliberately broad and diverse, rather than narrow and specialized, with the objective of preparing students for an increasingly multi-cultural, interdependent, and dynamic world. Students in this major will obtain a well-rounded academic foundation through an array of courses in traditional Liberal Arts disciplines, structured around focused fields of study. Additionally, they will master the ability to think critically and communicate effectively across a multitude of subject areas, fostering a confident, informed, dynamic and independent worldview.

Liberal Arts majors must complete a total of 55 credit hours. All majors will take 22 hours of required core courses. Additionally, students will be required to select a specific track – in American Studies, Great Ideas, Environmental Studies, or Global Learning (students may select to "build your own" track) – and will complete 15 credit hours of required courses and 18 credit hours of electives in their track of choice.

Students in this major will be required to maintain an online portfolio of work from all their classes throughout their time at Flagler. They will be required to submit a reflection on the interdisciplinary nature of their work and their progress in their final semester.

In addition, students are encouraged to pursue independent research and internship experiences in the local community and abroad. Internship positions are available to students of junior or senior standing who have obtained a minimum cumulative average of 3.0 and permission from the instructor. Electives used for the Liberal Studies major cannot be used as electives for any other major or minor.
