Secondary Education (English) Major

The Secondary Education English program at Flagler College, which is a critical teacher shortage area in the state of Florida, is designed to prepare excellent middle and high school teachers of English language arts. Coursework encompasses the full English major as well as Education methods courses that will address evidence-based practices that will prepare students to effectively teach reading, writing, speaking, and listening, the four fundamental language processes. In addition to robust coursework, the program will include field experiences in public school settings where there will be opportunities to apply the knowledge and skills that have been learned. The capstone for the program is the student teaching internship, which occurs during the final semester. Upon successful completion of the program, teacher candidates will have fulfilled the requirements for Florida Teacher Certification in English (Grades 6-12) with English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) endorsement.

The English major, with a literature track, can be achieved within this degree. Students must declare their intent to pursue this additional major to the Center for Advising & Core Experience (CACE) in order for it to be reflected on transcripts.
