American Sign Language Minor

The minor in American Sign Language (ASL) provides students with a foundation for the development of their expressive and receptive skills applicable to the professional and/or educational setting and in the understanding of Deaf Culture, Deaf Identity, and Diversity. Students minoring in ASL will have the opportunity to develop a cross-cultural understanding of the rich, cultural heritage of the Deaf community including literature, the performing arts, and the educational and political aspects surrounding the community. The minor in ASL is open to all students at Flagler College.

All students who wish to earn a minor in ASL must complete a minimum of 15 hours of coursework in ASL or related study (ex. Approved EDD options).

Note that there are separate requirements for students majoring in Deaf Education (EDDEL).

In addition to the 15 hour  minimum ASL requirement, students who are majoring in Deaf Education must choose at least one additional course to satisfy the requirements for the ASL minor.

The ASL minor is not a direct pathway to earning the Florida Teaching ASL Endorsement. If you are interested in earning a Teaching ASL endorsement, please review the requirements outlined here: Program: Endorsement in Teaching American Sign Language in the Public Schools - Flagler College - Acalog ACMS™
